Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an emerging intervention for ASD that aims to alleviate core and associated symptoms of ASD.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) & Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT) are non-invasive brain stimulation techniques that use magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It involves the application of brief magnetic pulses to specific areas of the scalp, which induce small electrical currents in the underlying brain tissue.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an emerging non-invasive therapeutic technique that shows promise for treating autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by targeting and modulating brain activity associated with social communication and repetitive behaviors. Research indicates that TMS can lead to significant improvements in various core symptoms of ASD, such as enhanced social interactions and reduced stereotyped behaviors.

In the United States, TMS is FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraines. Although TMS is not FDA-approved for Autism, it can still be administered as an “off-label” treatment modality.

The Research:

In this study, “Recent findings generally indicate that TMS has positive effects on stereotypical behavior, repetitive behavior, verbal and social aspects of ASD, leading to overall improvement across all scale scores post-intervention.”
